Applying for Canadian citizenship is an exciting step, and if you’re 55 years of age or older, the process comes with some simplified requirements. Here’s a step-by-step guide tailored to applicants in this age group.
Eligibility Requirements
If you are 55 or older at the time you apply, you do not need to meet the language or citizenship test requirements. However, you must still meet the following:
Be a permanent resident of Canada.
Have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) in the last 5 years before applying.
Have filed your income taxes, if required, for at least 3 years within that 5-year period.
Not be under a removal order, in prison, or facing criminal charges in or outside Canada.
Gather Your Documents
You’ll need to collect the following documents:
A copy of your permanent resident card (both sides), or your Record of Landing (IMM 1000) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292 or IMM 5688).
Two pieces of personal ID, one with your photo and signature (e.g., passport, driver’s license).
Proof of time in Canada, such as travel documents or records (if required).
Tax documents, like Notice of Assessment (optional but helpful).
Photographs that meet IRCC’s specifications.
Complete the Application Form
Use the most recent version of the form “Application for Canadian Citizenship – Adults (18 years or older)” available on the IRCC website. Even though you’re over 55, you use the same form, but you can skip the language proof and test preparation sections.
Pay the Fee
As of 2025, the fee is $649.75 including the right of citizenship fee. You can pay it online and must include the receipt with your application.
Submit Your Application
Send your completed application and supporting documents by mail to the address specified on the IRCC website. Keep a copy of everything and track your delivery.
What Happens Next?
You’ll receive an acknowledgment of receipt, and later a notice for a citizenship ceremony if you’re approved. Since you don’t need to take the citizenship test, your process may be more straightforward.
