What is the minimum IELTS score required for Canada immigration?

There is no single minimum IELTS score that applies to all Canadian immigration programs. Canada assesses language ability using the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), and IELTS General Training results are converted into CLB levels. Each immigration program has its own language threshold, and meeting the minimum requirement does not always mean the applicant will be competitive or receive an invitation to apply.

For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the minimum requirement is CLB 7 in each of the four skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This corresponds to IELTS scores of 6.0 in all categories. Meeting this minimum allows applicants to enter the Express Entry pool, but the Comprehensive Ranking System is points‑based, so stronger scores significantly improve an applicant’s ranking.

The Canadian Experience Class has two different minimums depending on the applicant’s occupation. For work experience in TEER 0 or 1 occupations, the minimum remains CLB 7. For TEER 2 or 3 occupations, the minimum requirement drops to CLB 5, which corresponds to IELTS scores around Listening 5.0, Reading 4.0, Writing 5.0, and Speaking 5.0. This lower requirement reflects the broader range of occupations eligible under the CEC.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program has even lower language requirements, needing only CLB 5 in speaking and listening and CLB 4 in reading and writing. Many Provincial Nominee Program streams set their own thresholds, which often range between CLB 4 and CLB 7, depending on the occupation, employer requirements, and regional labour needs.

Even when the minimum is low, higher IELTS results can provide substantial benefits. Stronger language scores not only increase CRS points but also open eligibility for additional programs, improve employability after landing, and strengthen long‑term integration into Canadian society. Many applicants retake the IELTS multiple times to improve their scores, and targeted study often leads to meaningful increases. For applicants competing in Express Entry, aiming for CLB 8 or CLB 9 is often a strategic choice to maximize competitiveness.
