Applying for permanent residence (PR) from outside Canada follows a similar process as applying from within Canada, but includes additional requirements like visa issuance. Major pathways include Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), and family sponsorship. Applicants abroad must ensure all documentation is valid and verifiable before submission.
Most skilled workers use Express Entry. They must create an online IRCC profile, submit language test results, obtain an educational credential assessment (ECA), and detail their work history, after which they receive a CRS score. If the score is above the minimum required in any particular draw, the candidate receives an Invitation to Apply (ITA) and must apply within 60 days.
Once approved, applicants receive a permanent resident visa in their passport. They must travel to Canada before the expiry date on their visa to finalize their landing. Family-sponsored applicants can also apply from abroad, and once approved, travel to Canada with a permanent resident visa and become permanent residents when they arrive in Canada.
